Helvellyn & Ullswater Mountain Journey
A guided 1-night mountain journey through the Helvellyn and Ullswater fells, with classic Lakeland scenery, remote camp options and routes shaped by weather, conditions and group pace.
A bigger Lake District wild camp with classic mountain atmosphere
This is a guided Helvellyn and Ullswater overnight for walkers who want a stronger mountain feel than our gentler first wild camp options, without being locked into a fixed summit or ridge objective.
The Helvellyn area gives the trip real scale: high corries, open fellside, ridges, tarns and views across Ullswater. It feels like a proper mountain journey while still fitting into a compact 2-day format.
The route and camp area are chosen to suit the weather, ground conditions and the group. When conditions allow, we may include higher ground, summit terrain or classic ridge options — but the priority is always a good, well-managed overnight experience.
Best for
- ✓Walkers wanting a bigger mountain feel.
- ✓People with good hill fitness and some mountain walking experience.
- ✓Anyone building toward bigger Lake District or Scottish journeys.
Why Helvellyn & Ullswater?
The Helvellyn and Ullswater fells offer one of the most dramatic overnight mountain settings in the Lake District. You get steep-sided valleys, big open views, classic fell terrain and a genuine sense of height, without having to treat the trip as a fixed summit challenge.
Classic Lakeland terrain, flexible delivery
This trip is deliberately framed as a mountain journey rather than a guaranteed Red Tarn camp, Striding Edge crossing or Helvellyn summit tick.
That gives your guide the freedom to make better decisions: staying lower if the weather is poor, using quieter lines if the hills are busy, or taking in higher ground when the group and conditions are right.
The result is a safer, calmer and more enjoyable overnight experience, with the classic Helvellyn atmosphere still very much at the heart of the trip.
Optional kit hire
You do not need to buy a full wild camping setup before trying this trip. Optional hire can help remove the equipment barrier.
- ✓Full package: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, stove and 60L rucksack.
- ✓Kit bundle: sleeping bag, sleeping mat and 60L rucksack.
- ✓Tent hire: lightweight mountain tent suitable for UK conditions.
You still need suitable boots, waterproofs, warm layers, food and personal items.

The 2-day journey
The exact route is always adapted to weather, visibility and group pace. The outline below gives the intended shape of the trip.
Glenridding, Ullswater and mountain camp
We meet in the Glenridding / Ullswater area for introductions, kit checks and packing. From there we begin a steady journey into the Helvellyn fells, choosing a route and camp area that fits the weather, conditions and group.
Morning in the fells and return to Ullswater
After breakfast and breaking camp, we continue the mountain journey before descending back towards Ullswater. Depending on conditions, the route may include higher ground, tarns, ridges or quieter mountain lines in the Helvellyn area.
A quiet wild camp in the Lake District — the moment the mountains feel completely different.
A night in the Helvellyn fells
The overnight element changes the whole feel of the mountains. The busy daytime rhythm fades, light changes across the ridges, and the fells become quieter and more atmospheric.
This is where the trip becomes more than a walk. You experience what it feels like to live out of your pack, choose a pitch carefully, manage warmth, food and water, and wake up already in the mountains.
For many people, this is the point where wild camping stops being an idea and becomes something they can realistically do again.
