The Edge of the Atlantic

The West Coast of Scotland is a landscape of complex sea lochs, ancient temperate rainforests, and white-sand bays. This 2-day taster is an immersion into the rugged Atlantic seaboard, designed for those who want to experience wild camping where the mountains meet the sea. From the ancient Lewisian Gneiss underfoot to the sea eagles overhead, it is a masterclass in coastal wilderness.

Why the Atlantic Coast?

We lead our tasters in Ardgour and the surrounding coastal fringes because they offer an “edge of Europe” feel that is rare elsewhere. You’ll learn the Mountain Craft required for coastal environments—managing tidal awareness, analyzing wind-shadows on exposed headlands, and the ritual of the mountain stove in a salt-sprayed breeze.

Our Mountain Leaders don’t just guide; they interpret. You’ll explore the rare Atlantic Oakwoods—Scotland’s own temperate rainforest—and learn how the 3-billion-year-old geology of the West defines every cove and crag.

Pro Kit Provided

Coastal camping requires equipment that can handle high-moisture environments. We remove the £1,200 entry cost by providing our fleet of technical gear, ensuring your first night by the ocean is warm, dry, and safe.

  • Shelters: Terra Nova & Vaude storm-rated tents.
  • Sleep: -10C Sleep Systems & thermal mats.
  • Packs: Osprey 65L+ rucksacks, professionally fitted.
  • Kitchen: All stoves, fuel, and cookware included.

*Technical hire included in your £195 taster fee.

The 2-Day Adventure

Day 1

Machair & Hidden Coves

Meet at our West Coast trailhead for kit fitting. We traverse rugged headlands and ancient oakwoods to reach a secluded bay. You’ll master the art of site selection on coastal ground, learning to manage your kit in the Atlantic breeze as the sun sets over the Minch.

Day 2

Coastal Rims & Return

Wake up to the sounds of the ocean. After a slow mountain breakfast, we explore the dramatic headlands and tidal pools of the coastline. We’ll focus on coastal navigation and identifying local marine life before returning to the trailhead for a mid-afternoon finish.

Coastal Craft & Ethics

Leave No Trace

The Atlantic machair and coastal dunes are incredibly fragile habitats. Operating under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, we teach you how to enjoy the coast without leaving a mark. From responsible waste management to protecting nesting shorebirds, you’ll learn to camp ethically on the edge of the ocean.

Guided Confidence

Coastal weather systems can be relentless. Our Qualified Mountain Leaders (ML) provide a safety margin that standard camping can’t match. We cover wind-shadow analysis and coastal micro-navigation, giving you the foundation to eventually eye bigger challenges like our Fisherfield 6 or the Knoydart Traverse.

What’s included

  • Professional Mountain Leader (ML) support
  • Full Technical Kit Hire (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Pack)
  • All expedition meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Safety equipment & water filtration
