A Balcony Over the Arctic interior

The Cairngorm plateau is a landscape defined by scale and silence. Unlike the glens below, the plateau is a vast, rolling tundra where the weather and light shift with incredible speed. This 2-day taster is designed to bridge the gap between valley walks and high-altitude exploration, giving you a managed introduction to the UK’s most expansive mountain interior.

Why the High Plateau?

We lead our tasters here because the “High Start” from the Ski Centre (635m) allows us to bypass the forest slog and spend our time where it matters—among the granite tors and glacial corries. You’ll camp on high balcony tiers overlooking the Loch Avon basin, experiencing the isolation of the plateau without the gear-heavy stress of a solo expedition.

Our Mountain Leaders don’t just guide; they interpret. You’ll learn about the fragile moss-heath ecosystems that survive here and why the plateau is the only place in Britain where reindeer still roam the wild tundra.

Pro Kit Provided

Spending a night at 1,000m requires specialized equipment. We remove the £1,200 barrier by providing our fleet of 4-season technical gear, specifically chosen for the plateau’s unpredictable conditions.

  • Shelters: Terra Nova & Vaude 4-season tents.
  • Sleep: -10C Down Sleep Systems & thermal mats.
  • Packs: Osprey 65L+ rucksacks, professionally fitted.
  • Kitchen: All stoves, fuel, and cookware included.

*Technical hire included in your £195 fee.

The 2-Day Adventure

Day 1

Ben Macdui & The Plateau

Starting high at the Ski Centre, we traverse the northern corries edge toward the Ben Macdui plateau. We’ll find a stunning “balcony” site overlooking the Shelter Stone and Loch Avon, where you’ll master the art of pitching in high-altitude environments.

Day 2

Corrie Rims & Return

Wake up to views of the sub-arctic interior. After a slow mountain breakfast, we explore the Feith Buidhe waterfalls and the rim of the Great Slab before returning via the high passes for a mid-afternoon finish.

Mountain Craft & Ethics

Leave No Trace

The Cairngorm Plateau is one of the UK’s most fragile environments. Operating under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, we teach you how to enjoy the wilderness without leaving a mark. From responsible site selection to water filtration from glacial burns, you’ll learn to protect this sub-arctic tundra.

Expertise & Safety

Weather patterns at 1,000m are unpredictable. Our Qualified Mountain Leaders (ML) provide a safety margin that standard camping can’t match. We cover micro-navigation and terrain analysis, giving you the foundation to eventually eye bigger challenges like the Cairngorm 4000ers Traverse.

What’s included

  • Professional Mountain Leader (ML) support
  • Full Technical Kit Hire (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Pack)
  • All expedition meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Safety equipment & water filtration
