A Journey Carved by Deep Time

This 2-day taster is an immersive entry into the Highland interior. Known as the “Highland Rift,” Glen Tilt follows a perfectly straight geological fault line that cuts through the Cairngorms National Park. It is a landscape of massive scale, where rolling 1,000m peaks meet crystal-clear river pools—the ultimate classroom for your first night under canvas.

Why this Taster?

We lead our tasters in the Tilt because the landscape tells a story. Here, in 1785, the polymath James Hutton discovered the “Hutton Sections”—the evidence that granite was once molten rock, fundamentally changing our understanding of the Earth. As we walk, your guide will point out where pink granite intrudes into ancient schist, blending physical adventure with local authority.

You’ll learn the Mountain Craft required to thrive here: from analyzing wind-shadows for the perfect pitch to managing your kit in a sub-arctic environment.

Removing the £1,000+ “gear barrier” is our priority. Arrive at Blair Atholl and we’ll provide the professional equipment you need to stay warm, dry, and comfortable.

  • Sleep: -10C Down Sleep Systems & thermal mats.

The 2-Day Adventure

Day 1

Into the Highland Rift

Meet at Blair Atholl for a technical kit fitting. We head deep into the glen, following the River Tilt as the valley walls steepen. You’ll learn to select a responsible, low-impact site by the river, mastering the ritual of the mountain stove as the light fades over the peaks.

Day 2

Highland Morning & Descent

Wake up to the sound of the glen. After a mountain breakfast, we explore the upper falls and the famous geological “contact” points of the fault line. We’ll wind our way back to the trailhead, arriving back for late afternoon travel via the A9 or Rail.

Mountain Craft & Ethics

Leave No Trace

Operating under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, we teach you how to enjoy the wilderness without leaving a mark. From responsible waste management to water filtration from Highland burns, you’ll leave with the ethics required to protect the Atholl Estate and beyond.

Guided Confidence

Your first night under canvas shouldn’t be a gamble. Our Qualified Mountain Leaders (ML) provide a safety margin that standard camping can’t match. We cover micro-navigation and terrain analysis, giving you the foundation to eventually eye bigger challenges like our Skye Ridge Traverse.

What’s included

  • Professional Mountain Leader (ML) support
  • Full Technical Kit Hire (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Pack)
  • All expedition meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
