Our 1-day intensive is designed for summer hillwalkers stepping into winter for the first time. We focus on high-value skills that translate directly to your first winter Munros: movement, equipment, and judgment.

1-Day Core Syllabus
A practical intensive day focused on equipment confidence and sound judgment on snow-covered terrain.
Movement
Develop steady footwork and balance for snow-covered slopes, including kicking steps and walking on steeper ground.
Emergency Skills
Master ice axe arrest techniques — the essential drills for stopping a slide in winter conditions.
Avalanche Awareness
Learn how to interpret the SAIS avalanche forecast and identify hazardous terrain on the Cairngorm Plateau.
Arrive with the right kit
Winter hills require specific gear. You will need stiffened B2 or B3 boots, C2 crampons, and a walking axe. We recommend local hire if you are just starting out.

Meet at 9:00 AM at Tiso, Aviemore. We start with an indoor briefing on current conditions and equipment check before heading to the Cairngorm ski area.
