Knoydart Wild Camping Expedition from Kinloch Hourn

A remote four-day journey from Loch Hourn into the heart of Knoydart — wild camps, rugged mountain ground, and a finish in Inverie with ferry connections back to the mainland.

4 days Max 6 people Wild camping throughout Optional Munro day
Why this route

Loch Hourn to Inverie — a proper point-to-point expedition

Starting at Kinloch Hourn, the journey feels remote from the very first step — sea loch scenery, steep-sided mountains, and a strong sense of leaving easy access behind. From there you travel deeper into Knoydart, camping wild in sheltered locations chosen for the conditions and the flow of the day.

Finishing in Inverie gives the expedition a natural conclusion: a rare mainland village without a road connection, reached on foot and linked back to the mainland by ferry. It’s a genuine journey, not a “there and back” route.

The experience

Remote terrain, steady pace, and guide-led decisions

This is a challenging four-day wild camping trip for fit walkers. You’ll carry a multi-day pack and travel through rough ground, steep sections and boggy terrain. Route choices and camp locations stay flexible — so the experience remains safe, realistic and enjoyable.

There’s also the option of a Munro summit day if conditions allow, adding a big mountain highlight to the expedition.

Itinerary

A flexible four-day journey to Inverie

Knoydart demands flexibility. Weather and ground conditions can change quickly, so route choice and camp locations adapt. The outline below shows the typical flow — including an optional Munro day if conditions allow.

Day 1

Meet Fort William, transfer to Kinloch Hourn, hike to camp

Wild camp

Meet at Fort William Railway Station, then take a shared taxi transfer to Kinloch Hourn. From the end of the road, we begin the expedition on foot and settle into a steady pace before choosing a sheltered wild camp.

Overnight: Wild camp (location depends on conditions)
Day 2

Optional Munro day: Ladhar Bheinn

Conditions dependent

If weather, visibility and the group allow, this is the day for a big mountain highlight — Ladhar Bheinn. Your guide will make the call on the day and adapt the plan accordingly.

Overnight: Wild camp
Day 3

Journey day to Inverie, optional Old Forge visit

Wild camp

A strong travel day across classic Knoydart terrain as we work towards Inverie. If timing and energy allow, you may choose to visit The Old Forge Inn (not included), then we camp in/near Inverie.

Overnight: Wild camp in/near Inverie (location dependent)
Day 4

Ferry from Inverie to Mallaig and onward travel

Ferry not included

We take the ferry from Inverie to Mallaig, then connect onward by rail/road. We’ll confirm recommended timings and travel pointers in your joining instructions.

Finish: Inverie → ferry to Mallaig
