A short, serious Knoydart crossing

This is the classic Knoydart experience in a compact format: arrive, carry what you need, camp out and travel on foot between two of the peninsula’s best-known access points.

The route runs in both directions. Some departures travel from Kinloch Hourn to Inverie; others begin in Inverie and finish at Kinloch Hourn. You choose your preferred route and dates in the booking panel below.

The appeal is simple: a real point-to-point wild camping journey with the awkward logistics made easier. You still carry your own kit and food, but the route planning, group pacing, safety management and transfers are handled for you.

Transfers, ferry and route logistics

Knoydart logistics are part of the challenge. We keep the public-facing plan simple: choose your direction, arrive at the stated meeting point, and we manage the route, safety decisions and included transfers from there.

Fort William or Inverie starts

The Kinloch Hourn to Inverie route starts with an 08:00 meeting in Fort William. The Inverie to Kinloch Hourn route starts in Inverie after the Sunday ferry from Mallaig.

Carry your own kit and food

You carry your own personal equipment and food throughout. We provide group safety equipment and water filtration, with optional gear bundles available at booking.

Optional gear support

If you do not own expedition kit, you can add a pack, tent and sleep system bundle when booking. This helps make travel simpler without changing the expedition nature of the trip.

Why this Knoydart traverse?

Kinloch Hourn to Inverie is one of the classic ways to experience Knoydart on foot. It has the shape of a real journey: a defined start, a night at Barrisdale, a crossing of the bealach and a finish on the west coast.

Running the route in both directions means we can offer more dates while keeping the experience simple for participants. Whichever way you travel, the core ingredients are the same: remote terrain, wild camping, pack-carrying and a clear line across the peninsula.

If you are weighing this against longer routes, compare it with other guided wilderness expeditions in Scotland.

Simple, handled logistics

The route itself is remote, but the booking experience should not feel complicated. Transfers, ferry timings and route flow are built into the expedition so you can focus on preparing for the walk.

  • Two directions: choose the dates and route that suit you.
  • Small groups: flexible pacing and clear decision-making.
  • Optional gear bundles: pack, tent and sleep systems available.

Use the wild camping kit list and our wild camping guide to prepare boots, layers, waterproofs and personal essentials.

A compact guided wild camping expedition in Knoydart

The Knoydart Wild Camping Traverse is designed for walkers who want a genuine Scottish wilderness journey without committing to a longer five-day expedition. It combines remote glens, overnight camping, pack-carrying, ferry or transfer logistics and professional Mountain Leader support.

The route between Kinloch Hourn and Inverie is well known among independent backpackers, but the logistics can be awkward. This guided version keeps the experience real while making the practical side easier to manage.

For walkers building beyond shorter overnights, this is a strong progression step: more committing than a simple taster, shorter than the Glenfinnan traverse, and a practical way to experience one of Scotland’s most distinctive remote peninsulas.

The journey in both directions

The route can be travelled from Kinloch Hourn to Inverie or from Inverie to Kinloch Hourn. Both versions follow the same core line, with logistics adjusted around the start and finish.

The bealach crossing

The heart of the route is the crossing between Barrisdale and Inverie. This is the main mountain day, with rough ground, changing views and decisions shaped by weather, visibility and group pace.

Distances are not extreme, but the terrain, pack weight and remote setting make this a proper expedition day.
