The UK’s best-kept west coast mountain secret

Ardgour is one of the least-visited serious mountain areas in Scotland. Hidden glens, rough ridges and long views over Loch Shiel and the west coast create a landscape that feels far quieter than better-known Highland names. For walkers looking for a guided wilderness expedition in Scotland without the pressure and footfall of busier areas, it offers a rare combination of silence, structure and strong mountain character.

What makes this route especially appealing is its shape. Rather than a loose out-and-back camp trip, the journey starts near the sea at Corran and finishes at Glenfinnan Station. That point-to-point line gives the expedition a satisfying sense of progression and makes it feel bigger, cleaner and more complete than many shorter backpacking routes.

If you are comparing shorter and longer Scottish routes, the guided wilderness expeditions hub gives a useful overview of the wider Peak Adventures programme. For broader planning, camp craft and route-thinking, read our guide to wild camping in the UK.

Why Ardgour?

Ardgour sits in that rare category of Scottish mountain terrain that feels both substantial and overlooked. While better-known areas draw most of the attention, this west coast traverse offers rougher-feeling ground, quieter camps and a more private mountain atmosphere. It is ideal for walkers who want a guided wilderness expedition in Scotland that feels genuine rather than obvious.

The expedition also has a particularly elegant shape. Beginning near the ferry and finishing at Glenfinnan Station gives the journey a clear line and memorable conclusion. That sea-to-rail format is part of what makes the trip so satisfying: it feels like a proper traverse, not simply an overnight camp with some hills attached.

If you are weighing up Ardgour against longer Highland journeys, compare it with other guided wilderness expeditions in Scotland.

Travel & gear made easier

Point-to-point expeditions can feel more complicated on paper than they really are. We reduce that friction with clear joining information, practical travel guidance and optional pro gear bundles that make the trip easier to manage, especially for those travelling from further afield.

  • Full gear bundles: shelter, sleep and pack systems available for easier travel.
  • Expedition packs: pro-grade 60L+ options if you do not want to travel with your own.
  • Cleaner logistics: a simple sea-to-rail journey with clear joining notes.

Use the wild camping kit list and our wild camping guide to prepare boots, layers, waterproofs and personal essentials.

A compact Scottish wilderness traverse with real character

Ardgour occupies a particularly useful place within Scottish mountain travel. It offers genuine west coast remoteness, rougher-feeling terrain and quiet camps, but does so within a shorter three-day structure that makes it more accessible than some of the longer 4–5 day wilderness crossings. For many walkers, that makes it an ideal progression step into more committing multi-day mountain journeys.

The route’s point-to-point line is a major part of its appeal. Starting near Corran and finishing at Glenfinnan gives the expedition a natural narrative and a strong sense of movement through the landscape. Hidden glens, rough ridges and expansive west coast views combine to create a journey that feels richer than its duration might suggest.

For people searching for a guided wild camping expedition in Scotland with calm leadership, small groups and a quieter mountain atmosphere, Ardgour stands out as one of the best short-format wilderness traverses in the Peak Adventures programme.

The journey (3 days)

A calm progression from the sea into quiet west coast mountain terrain, finishing beneath the Glenfinnan skyline. Questions before booking? See our wild camping FAQs.

Day 1

The ascent from the sea

Starting near Corran, we leave the sea behind and begin climbing into the Ardgour interior. The first day establishes the expedition’s point-to-point character straight away, with a steady transition from low-level travel into quieter mountain ground and a high camp that already feels removed from roads and routine.

Day 2

The remote west coast interior

A full day across rougher, quieter terrain through the heart of Ardgour. This is where the expedition settles into its true rhythm: pathless or faint ground in places, steady decision-making, strong views and a real sense of being in one of Scotland’s least-visited mountain areas. Our second camp positions us well for the final crossing toward Glenfinnan.

Day 3

Descent to Glenfinnan

A final mountain morning leads into the long descent toward Glenfinnan. Finishing at the station gives the expedition one of the cleanest endings in the programme: a proper sense of arrival, an iconic Highland setting and a simple onward journey once the traverse is complete.
