A Night Above the Clouds

Helvellyn is the crown of the Eastern Fells, a landscape defined by dramatic glacial coves and the most famous “edges” in England. This 2-day taster is designed for those who want to transition from day-hikes to the immersive world of wild camping. By staying high near the summit, you’ll experience the stillness of the fells long after the day-trippers have descended to Glenridding.

Why Helvellyn?

We lead our Lakeland tasters here because the Helvellyn massif offers a perfect blend of technical interest and spectacular camp-site potential. You’ll learn the Mountain Craft required for the Lakes—analyzing the unique airflow over the ridges and selecting a responsible site that respects the fragile montane environment.

Our Mountain Leaders don’t just guide; they interpret. You’ll learn about the volcanic history of the Borrowdale Volcanics and how the last ice age carved the deep “cwms” and sharp “arêtes” like Striding Edge that define this iconic range.

Pro Kit Provided

Lakes weather is notoriously fickle. We remove the gear-barrier by providing our fleet of 4-season technical equipment, ensuring you stay warm and dry even if the Atlantic moisture rolls in over the summit.

  • Shelters: Terra Nova & Vaude storm-rated tents.
  • Sleep: -10C Sleep Systems & thermal mats.
  • Packs: Osprey 65L+ rucksacks, professionally fitted.
  • Kitchen: All stoves, fuel, and cookware included.

*Technical hire included in your £195 taster fee.

The 2-Day Lakeland Adventure

Day 1

The Ascent & Red Tarn Pitch

Meeting in Glenridding for a kit-check, we begin our ascent toward the Helvellyn massif. We aim for a high camp near Red Tarn, nestled beneath the towering headwall. You’ll master the art of pitching on fell-side terrain, learning to manage your kit as the light goldens over Ullswater.

Day 2

Striding Edge & Summit

After a slow mountain breakfast, we tackle the legendary Striding Edge. With the confidence of a night in the wild behind you, we summit Helvellyn before descending via Swirral Edge, returning to Glenridding for a mid-afternoon finish.

Mountain Craft & Ethics

Leave No Trace

The Lake District National Park is a shared landscape. We operate with a strict “Leave No Trace” policy, teaching you how to camp responsibly on the fells. From site selection to managing waste, we ensure our presence is invisible, protecting the sensitive montane ecology of the high ridges.

Guided Confidence

Your first night on the fells shouldn’t be a gamble. Our Qualified Mountain Leaders (ML) provide a safety margin that standard camping can’t match. We cover micro-navigation and terrain analysis, giving you the foundation to eventually eye bigger challenges like our Scafell Pike Traverse.

What’s included

  • Professional Mountain Leader (ML) support
  • Full Technical Kit Hire (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Pack)
  • All expedition meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Safety equipment & water filtration
