Above the Stony Desert

The Scafell massif is England’s most formidable mountain environment. A world of fractured lava flows and deep glacial gills, the summit plateau is a high-altitude “stony desert” that feels entirely removed from the valleys below. This 2-day taster is designed to bridge the gap between day-hikes and self-sufficient exploration on the highest ground in the country.

Why the Massif?

We lead our tasters here because the Scafells demand respect and reward it with a sense of “mountain gravity” found nowhere else in the Lakes. You’ll learn Mountain Craft specific to rocky, high-altitude terrain—from micro-navigation across the plateau to selecting responsible sites amidst the Scafell Dacite boulder fields.

Our Mountain Leaders don’t just guide; they interpret. You’ll explore the volcanic history of the massif and the glacial action that carved the iconic Mickledore ridge and the formidable Broad Stand.

Pro Kit Provided

The Scafell plateau is exposed to the full force of Atlantic weather. We remove the £1,200 entry barrier by providing our fleet of 4-season technical equipment, ensuring you stay warm and protected on the roof of England.

  • Shelters: Terra Nova & Vaude 4-season tents.
  • Sleep: -10C Sleep Systems & thermal mats.
  • Packs: Osprey 65L+ rucksacks, professionally fitted.
  • Kitchen: All stoves, fuel, and cookware included.

*Technical hire included in your £195 taster fee.

The 2-Day Adventure

Day 1

The Ascent & Massif Pitch

Meeting at Seathwaite, we begin our ascent into the heart of the massif. We traverse toward the high cols, selecting a secluded spot among the crags of the Eskdale flank. You’ll master the art of “boulder-field” pitching, learning to manage your kit as the sun dips behind Great End.

Day 2

Summit Plateau & Return

Wake up to the total silence of the high fells. After a mountain breakfast, we push for the summit of Scafell Pike. We’ll focus on micro-navigation across the featureless stony plateau before descending via the Corridor Route for a mid-afternoon finish.

Mountain Craft & Ethics

Leave No Trace

The Scafells are a sensitive mountain environment. We teach you how to camp responsibly on the high ground, focusing on “invisible” pitching and waste management. Our goal is to ensure the National Trust land we traverse remains as pristine as we found it.

Expertise & Safety

The stony plateau of the Scafells can be disorientating in mist. Our Qualified Mountain Leaders (ML) provide a safety margin that standard camping can’t match. We cover compass skills and terrain analysis, giving you the foundation to eventually eye bigger challenges like our Fisherfield 6.

What’s included

  • Professional Mountain Leader (ML) support
  • Full Technical Kit Hire (Tent, Sleeping Bag, Pack)
  • All expedition meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Safety equipment & water filtration
