A dramatic Lake District ridge day
Blencathra is one of the Lake District’s most distinctive mountains, with Sharp Edge providing one of its most exciting and memorable ways to reach the summit.
Starting near Mungrisdale, we walk into the quieter northern side of the fell before making our way towards Scales Tarn and the start of Sharp Edge.
This is a premium small-group guided walk with a maximum group size of 4, giving more time, space and support on the ridge.

The route
From Mungrisdale, we head into the northern side of Blencathra and make our way towards Scales Tarn. From here, Sharp Edge gives a short but serious ridge approach to the summit plateau.
Sharp Edge is narrow, exposed and rocky. Your guide will manage the route carefully and choose the most appropriate line for the conditions and group.
The exact route may be adjusted on the day depending on weather, wind, visibility, ground conditions and group ability.
Typical itinerary
- 09:00 Meet near Mungrisdale
- 09:15 Equipment check and route briefing
- Morning Walk towards Scales Tarn
- Late morning Approach and assess Sharp Edge
- Midday Cross Sharp Edge and reach Blencathra summit area
- Afternoon Descend by a suitable mountain route
- 16:00–17:00 Return to Mungrisdale area

Meeting point
We meet near Mungrisdale, using roadside parking just outside the village.
Please allow enough time to arrive, park and be ready for the start of the walk.

Fitness and experience
This is a full mountain day. You should be reasonably fit, able to walk for 6–8 hours, and comfortable moving on rough mountain paths.
Sharp Edge is narrower and more serious than many walkers expect. You do not need to be an experienced scrambler, but you must have a good head for heights and be comfortable on exposed rocky ground.
The minimum recommended age is 15 when accompanied by a participating adult.

Do I need scrambling experience?
Previous scrambling experience is helpful but not essential. You do need to be confident on rough mountain ground and comfortable with exposure.
How difficult is Sharp Edge?
Sharp Edge is short, rocky and exposed. In dry, calm conditions it can be a brilliant mountain experience, but in poor weather it becomes much more serious.
What happens if the weather is poor?
Your guide will assess the conditions and may adjust the route if required. Safety always comes first, and Sharp Edge will only be used when it is appropriate for the conditions and group.
Will we definitely cross Sharp Edge?
The intention is to cross Sharp Edge, but the final decision is made by the guide on the day. Wind, rain, visibility, rock conditions and group ability will all be considered.
