A classic first wild camp in the Borrowdale fells

Borrowdale is one of the best places in the Lake District for a first guided wild camp. It gives you big mountain atmosphere, dramatic scenery and a proper overnight journey without needing to force a camp onto a busy summit corridor.

The trip is built around good camp choices, steady pacing and views towards some of the most recognisable mountains in the Lakes, including Scafell and Great Gable.

You will carry overnight kit, walk through real mountain terrain and experience the slower rhythm of an evening and morning in the fells, supported throughout by experienced mountain leadership.

Why Borrowdale?

Borrowdale gives you the feel of a proper Lake District mountain journey without the pressure of a summit-bagging itinerary. It has dramatic valley scenery, access to high mountain ground and views towards Scafell, Great Gable and the surrounding fells.

A better first wild camp experience

Some famous Lake District summits are busy, rocky and awkward for a first wild camping experience. Borrowdale allows us to build a better journey around scenery, camp quality and sensible route choices.

The aim is not to chase a crowded summit pitch. The aim is to enjoy a proper night in the mountains, with good views, good decisions and a relaxed but genuine sense of adventure.

Routes and camp areas are adapted to weather, group pace and conditions on the day.

Optional kit hire

You do not need to buy a full wild camping setup before trying this trip. Optional hire can help remove the equipment barrier.

  • Full package: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, stove and 60L rucksack.
  • Kit bundle: sleeping bag, sleeping mat and 60L rucksack.
  • Tent hire: lightweight mountain tent suitable for UK conditions.

You still need suitable boots, waterproofs, warm layers, food and personal items.

What the trip gives you

This is a guided mountain experience first. The focus is the journey, the camp, the scenery and the confidence that comes from travelling with an experienced Mountain Leader.

Along the way, your guide will help with pacing, route choices and camp decisions so the weekend feels calm, achievable and well managed.

  • A guided first wild camp in the Borrowdale fells
  • Views towards Scafell, Great Gable and the surrounding mountains
  • Support with pacing, route choice and conditions
  • A safe, guided introduction to overnight mountain travel
  • Confidence for future wild camps and longer trips

It is not a formal course, but you will naturally pick up useful habits from travelling with an experienced Mountain Leader.

The 2-day journey

The exact route is always adapted to weather, visibility and group pace. The outline below gives the intended shape of the trip.

Day 1

Borrowdale, mountain journey and wild camp

We meet in the Borrowdale / Seathwaite area for introductions, kit checks and packing. From there we begin a steady journey into the fells, choosing a route and camp area that fits the weather, conditions and group.

Day 2

Morning in the mountains and return to Borrowdale

After breakfast and breaking camp, we continue the mountain journey before descending back towards Borrowdale. Depending on conditions, the route may take in higher ground, tarns, ridges or quieter mountain lines with views towards Scafell and Great Gable.

A quiet wild camp in the Lake District — the moment the mountains feel completely different.

A night in the Borrowdale fells

The overnight element changes the whole feel of the mountains. The busy daytime rhythm fades, light changes across the ridges, and the fells become quieter and more atmospheric.

This is where the trip becomes more than a walk. You experience what it feels like to live out of your pack, choose a pitch carefully, manage warmth, food and water, and wake up already in the mountains.

For many people, this is the point where wild camping stops being an idea and becomes something they can realistically do again.
