Check dates & bookA balcony over the arctic interior
The Cairngorm plateau is a landscape defined by scale and silence. Unlike the glens below, the plateau is a vast, rolling tundra where the weather and light shift with incredible speed.
This 2-day taster is designed to bridge the gap between valley walks and high-altitude exploration, giving you a managed introduction to the UK’s most expansive mountain interior.
Why the high plateau?
We lead our tasters here because the high start from the ski area lets us bypass the long lower approach and spend our time where it matters — among granite tors, glacial corries and the balcony camps above Loch Avon.
Why the High Plateau?
We use this setting because it gives a genuine feel of Cairngorm wilderness without the full commitment of a longer expedition. You gain a proper overnight mountain experience in a landscape that feels remote, open and unmistakably different from the glens below.
Our Mountain Leaders do more than guide the route. They help interpret the place itself — from the shape of the corries and granite plateau to the fragile moss-heath ecosystems that make this one of the UK’s most distinctive mountain environments.
Optional kit hire
We can help remove the biggest barrier to getting started by offering quality technical hire for people who do not yet own a full wild camping setup.
- ✓Shelter systems: Quality mountain tents suitable for UK conditions.
- ✓Sleep systems: Warm sleeping bag and mat options for overnight comfort.
- ✓Large packs: Expedition-sized rucksacks where needed.
Hire is arranged separately where required. Regiondo remains the live source for trip dates and base pricing.
The 2-day adventure
Ben Macdui & the plateau
Starting high, we head out toward the Ben Macdui plateau and the northern corries edge. The aim is a superb balcony camp above the Loch Avon basin, with time to settle in properly and learn the practicalities of pitching and living comfortably in a high mountain environment.
Corrie rims & return
After a steady mountain breakfast, we explore more of the plateau edge and surrounding features before returning by a high-level line. The second day keeps the pace calm and instructional, giving the trip the feel of a genuine mountain journey rather than a rushed out-and-back.
