For a 3-to-5 day expedition, 65 liters is the industry standard for a reason. It provides enough volume to carry a 4-season sleep system, a mountain tent, and several days of food, without becoming so large that it becomes unwieldy in high winds or steep scrambles.

The Secret is in the Fit

A common mistake is buying a pack based on “look” rather than back length. A poorly fitted pack puts the entire load on your shoulders, leading to rapid fatigue. • Heavy items close to the spine: Place your tent and water near the center of your back to keep your center of gravity stable.
• Light items at the bottom: Your sleeping bag acts as a base layer in the pack, providing a cushion for the heavier gear above.
• Frequency of use: Keep your waterproofs and snacks in the top lid or side pockets. You don’t want to be unpacking in a rainstorm.
