Helvellyn Wild Camp: The Edges
A guided Lake District wild camping adventure with a high mountain camp near Red Tarn and a classic Helvellyn summit journey shaped by weather, conditions and group pace.
A proper first mountain overnight
This is our flagship Lake District overnight for walkers who want to move beyond day walks and experience a guided wild camp in classic Lakeland mountain terrain.
Helvellyn gives the trip a strong sense of journey: Red Tarn, dramatic coves, high ridges, summit ground and one of England’s most recognisable mountain landscapes.
It is designed to be achievable, but still real. You carry overnight kit, move through exposed mountain terrain and experience the atmosphere of the fells after the crowds have gone home.
Best for
- ✓Walkers ready for their first guided wild camp.
- ✓People with solid hill fitness but limited overnight experience.
- ✓Anyone building toward bigger Lake District or Scottish expeditions.
Why Helvellyn?
Helvellyn is one of the best places in the Lake District for a first guided wild camping experience. It offers dramatic mountain scenery, strong route options and a real sense of height without needing a long expedition format.
Mountain atmosphere without a long commitment
Over two days you get the core ingredients of overnight mountain travel: route choice, pack management, camp craft, weather decisions and early-morning movement in the fells.
The route has enough scale to feel meaningful, but it remains compact enough for a weekend. It is ideal for walkers who want a genuine overnight mountain experience without jumping straight into a multi-day expedition.
We use the Helvellyn massif because it provides variety: steep paths, high corries, ridge options, changing weather and a strong summit journey when conditions allow.
Optional kit hire
You do not need to buy a full wild camping setup before trying this trip. Optional hire can help remove the equipment barrier.
- ✓Shelter: mountain tent options suitable for UK conditions.
- ✓Sleep system: sleeping bag and mat options.
- ✓Pack: large rucksack options if required.
You still need suitable boots, waterproofs, warm layers and personal clothing.
What the trip gives you
This is a guided mountain experience first. The focus is the journey, the camp, the summit and the atmosphere of Helvellyn once the day walkers have gone.
Along the way, your guide will help with pacing, route choices and camp decisions so the weekend feels calm, achievable and well managed.
- ✓A memorable high camp in the Helvellyn range
- ✓A classic Lake District mountain journey
- ✓Support with pacing, route choice and conditions
- ✓A safe, guided introduction to overnight mountain travel
- ✓Confidence for future wild camps and longer trips
It is not a formal course, but you will naturally pick up useful habits from travelling with an experienced Mountain Leader.
The 2-day journey
The exact route is always adapted to weather, visibility and group pace. The outline below gives the intended shape of the weekend.
Glenridding, ascent and high camp
We meet in the Glenridding area for introductions, kit checks and packing. From there we begin the ascent towards the Helvellyn massif, aiming for a high camp near Red Tarn where conditions allow. Along the way we cover efficient movement with an overnight pack, camp choice and practical mountain habits.
The edges, summit and descent
After breakfast and breaking camp, we continue the mountain journey. Depending on weather, visibility and group pace, the route may include Striding Edge, Swirral Edge, Helvellyn summit or a safer alternative line. The focus is on a memorable, well-managed mountain day rather than forcing a fixed route.
A high camp above Red Tarn — the moment the Lakes feel completely different.
A night above Red Tarn
The overnight element changes the whole feel of the mountains. The busy daytime rhythm fades, light changes across the ridges, and the fells become quieter and more atmospheric.
This is where the trip becomes more than a walk. You learn what it feels like to live out of your pack, choose a pitch carefully, manage warmth, food and water, and wake up already high in the mountains.
For many people, this is the point where wild camping stops being an idea and becomes something they can realistically do again.
