Trip details

Overview

The Isle of Rum (Rùm) is rugged, wild and wonderfully remote. This expedition is about moving through the landscape on foot, choosing safe and rewarding routes, and wild camping with a low-impact ethos. Your guide adapts the plan to weather, ground conditions and group ability.

Terrain & pace

Rum can be slow-going: expect steep climbs, rocky sections, boggy ground and occasional pathless navigation. Because you’ll be carrying a backpack, the emphasis is on steady pacing and good decision-making rather than chasing mileage.

Weather-led route choice

Conditions change quickly in the Inner Hebrides. For that reason, daily routes and high-level options in the Rùm Cuillin are chosen with the forecast in mind, and alternatives are always available when wind, rain or low cloud make higher ground less suitable.

Wild camping approach

Our approach to wild camping follows the principles of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code , with careful camp selection, low-impact practices and a strong emphasis on leaving no trace.

Where you’ll explore

Beyond Kinloch you’ll head into quieter corners of the island. Where conditions allow, the route may include high-level views towards Askival and Hallival, as well as remote bays, glens and coastline. On clear days you may also see Skye, Eigg and Muck.

Day-by-day itinerary (typical)

Day 1 — Ferry to Rum & hike to your first wild camp

  • Meet at Mallaig Ferry Terminal, cross to Kinloch and begin hiking
  • First camp in a sheltered coastal or glen location (conditions dependent)

Day 2 — Remote coastline and glens

  • Rugged terrain, slower-going underfoot, coached navigation and route choice
  • Wild camp in a quiet, remote location

Day 3 — Journey day & skills consolidation

  • Pathless sections possible; decision-making in real terrain
  • Wild camp beside river or coast (conditions dependent)

Day 4 — High-level mountain day (weather dependent)

  • If conditions allow: a higher-level day among the Rùm Cuillin
  • If not: a lower-level alternative route with equally strong scenery

Day 5 — Return to Kinloch & ferry back to Mallaig

  • Final morning, return to the jetty and cross back to the mainland

Note: Exact route, camps and day lengths vary with conditions and the group.

Fitness & experience
  • Fit walkers comfortable with consecutive full days
  • Expect 4–8 hours walking per day while carrying a backpack
  • Terrain may include steep climbs, rocky sections, boggy ground and pathless navigation
  • Best for people with some prior UK hillwalking experience
Equipment & preparation
