A quieter West Highland expedition

Loch Hourn cuts deep into rugged mountain country: a long sea loch with steep sides, rough paths and the kind of quiet you only find away from the main routes. This is a guided wilderness expedition in Scotland designed as a steady 4-day journey with realistic daily stages and camps chosen for shelter, water and good ground.

It offers genuine remoteness without relying on the biggest headline names. The atmosphere comes from rough coastal ground, changing weather, long views and the feeling of travelling through mountain country that still feels lightly visited and properly wild.

If you are comparing shorter and longer Scottish routes, the guided wilderness expeditions hub gives a useful overview of the wider Peak Adventures programme. For broader planning, camp craft and route-thinking, read our guide to wild camping in the UK.

Why Loch Hourn?

You get genuine remoteness without the pressure of the busiest or most obvious Highland routes. Long lochside sections, rough ground, quiet camps and a strong sense of moving through a self-contained landscape give this trip a proper expedition feel.

Route choice is always conditions-led. We adapt lines, timings and camp locations to weather, ground and the team, keeping the experience calm, realistic and well managed. That flexibility is part of what makes shorter wilderness journeys work so well.

A compact but serious wilderness journey

Loch Hourn offers a different kind of Scottish wilderness expedition. It is shorter than some of the larger 5-day journeys, but still rich in mountain atmosphere, quiet camps and route choice. For walkers searching for a guided wild camping journey in Scotland that feels substantial without becoming overlong, it is a strong option.

The combination of sea loch scenery, rough coastal ground, shelter-conscious camp selection and conditions-led movement gives the trip a genuine expedition character. It works well for people who want more than a taster, but who are not yet looking for the biggest or most logistically complex route in the programme.

For walkers progressing beyond shorter overnights, Loch Hourn is an excellent bridge between micro adventure formats and longer wilderness traverses: practical, quiet, professionally led and full of the core skills and atmosphere that define good mountain backpacking.

The journey (4 days)

A steady progression into quieter ground, with camps chosen for shelter and good pitching. Questions before booking? See our wild camping FAQs.

Day 1

Meet in Fort William & begin the expedition

Meet at Fort William railway station for final checks, then travel to the start and step straight into expedition pace. Expect rougher ground early on and a calm first camp as the group settles into the rhythm of multi-day mountain travel.

Day 2

Remote lochside travel & wild camp

A full day linking lochside sections and rough paths, with route choice driven by conditions. We focus on efficient movement, hydration and pacing, then build a sheltered camp with good water access and a strong sense of place.

Day 3

The character day

This is usually the day where the expedition earns its feel: bigger terrain decisions, more committing ground and a memorable final wilderness camp. We adjust ambition to the forecast, the ground and the team.

Day 4

Exit & return logistics

We complete the final stage and travel back to Fort William. If you are continuing by rail, we keep the day structured so the return remains as straightforward and low-stress as possible.

What’s included
