An accredited mountain skills course with added depth
Our 4-day programme is for walkers who want more than a short skills course can offer. The longer format gives you time to cover the full Mountain Training syllabus properly, revisit key skills, and apply them across a wider range of mountain situations.
We meet in Keswick and use the Lake District as a varied training ground for navigation, route choice, contour interpretation, timing, relocation, weather awareness, and safer movement in open mountain terrain.
The additional days allow us to include night navigation and wild camping systems, giving you a broader and more confidence-building progression in real mountain conditions.

4-day course progression
The four-day format includes the full Mountain Skills syllabus and adds extra time for consolidation, night navigation, student-led decision-making, and practical wild camp systems.
Days 1–2: navigation and mountain judgement
We begin with the core skills needed for independent mountain travel, building accuracy and confidence across Lakeland terrain.
- Map symbols, scale and contour interpretation
- Grid references and feature recognition
- Route planning and hazard awareness
- Pacing, timing and distance judgement
- Compass bearings and relocation techniques
- Movement skills across varied mountain terrain
Days 3–4: night navigation and wild camp systems
The second half of the course develops self-sufficiency through practical camp systems, lower-light navigation, and more independent movement in the hills.
- Dedicated night navigation session
- Wild camping systems and camp routine
- Water treatment and camp logistics
- Remote route choice on quieter mountain terrain
- Student-led navigation legs
- Developing independence in mountain terrain
Who this course is for
This course suits walkers who want more depth than a short skills course can provide. The longer format allows the skills to settle in properly through repetition, feedback, and real mountain decision-making over several days.
- Walkers building independence in mountain terrain
- People preparing for multi-day mountain journeys
- Hillwalkers wanting night navigation experience
- Anyone developing confidence with wild camping
Shorter course options
If you prefer a shorter course without the wild camp element, our Lake District 1-day and 2-day courses cover the same foundations in a condensed format.
Most complete option: the 4-day course is best for walkers who want time to consolidate skills properly and put them into practice in a more immersive way.
