This equipment list applies to Peak Adventures Mountain Skills, Winter Skills and Wild Camping courses. Your instructor will confirm any course-specific requirements before your trip.


Navigation & Safety Equipment

Essential Items

  • Ordnance Survey map for the course area (1:25,000 or 1:50,000)
  • Map case (Ortlieb recommended rather than PVC)
  • Compass (Silva Expedition 4 or similar)
  • Head torch (with spare batteries)
  • Smartphone with mapping apps, power bank and cables

Rucksack & Packing

Carrying Systems

  • Rucksack – minimum 30 litres (day courses)
  • Rucksack – minimum 50 litres (multi-day / expedition trips)
  • Rucksack liner or dry bags

Clothing

Mountain Clothing Essentials

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Hat (warm and sun hat)
  • Gloves (several pairs for winter courses)
  • Gaiters
  • Sunglasses and sun cream
  • Spare thermal underwear and socks
  • Evening clothing including insulated jacket

  • Ice axe *

Camping & Sleeping Equipment

Overnight Essentials

  • Sleeping mat (closed-cell or Thermarest type)
  • 3-season sleeping bag (wild camping)
  • Winter-grade sleeping bag with liner (-5°C comfort)
  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Tent *
  • Gore-Tex or similar bivvy bag

Cooking & Eating

Camp Kitchen

  • Stove, fuel and ignition method
  • Pot with lid
  • Cutlery (spork recommended)
  • Thermos flask
  • Nalgene water bottle

Food & Water

Daily Nutrition

  • Lunch for each day
  • Evening meals (high-calorie)
  • Breakfasts
  • Personal snacks

Hygiene & Personal Items

Personal Care

  • Biodegradable wipes and hand wash

Target Pack Weight

Recommended Load

Aim to carry no more than 15kg including 2 litres of water. Lighter kit improves comfort and safety on multi-day journeys.
