Winter Skills Course FAQs

Who are Winter Skills courses for?

Winter Skills courses are ideal for anyone wanting to start hillwalking and moving safely in winter conditions. They’re popular with beginners, three-season walkers stepping into winter, and anyone looking to build confidence on snow and ice.

Do I need prior winter experience?

No. Winter Skills courses are designed to be accessible for those new to winter terrain. Your instructor will build skills progressively and adapt the day to the group and conditions.

What will I learn on a Winter Skills course?

You’ll learn essential winter movement skills including using an ice axe, fitting and walking in crampons, safe footwork on snow, winter navigation fundamentals, and practical mountain safety decision-making.

Where do your Winter Skills courses take place?

Winter Skills courses run in UK mountain environments where winter conditions are most reliable. The exact venue depends on conditions and the course listing, with locations chosen to maximise learning and safety.

How fit do I need to be for Winter Skills training?

A reasonable level of hillwalking fitness is helpful. Winter terrain can be slower and more demanding than summer walking, but we set a comfortable pace and focus on skill development rather than speed.

How many people are on each Winter Skills course?

Group sizes are kept small so you get personal coaching, hands-on practice, and plenty of time to ask questions throughout the day.

What qualifications and experience do your instructors have?

Courses are led by highly experienced instructors with nationally recognised Mountain Training qualifications and extensive experience operating in UK winter mountain conditions.

What equipment do I need for a Winter Skills course?

You’ll need warm layers, waterproof jacket and trousers, winter hillwalking boots, gloves (ideally two pairs), hat, rucksack, food and drink. A full kit list is provided after booking so you can prepare confidently.

Do I need winter boots for crampons?

Yes—your boots must be compatible with the type of crampons used on the course. We’ll advise what’s suitable and help you avoid common boot-and-crampon pairing issues.

Are ice axes and crampons provided, or do I bring my own?

If you already own winter kit, you’re welcome to bring it. If not, we can advise on suitable options and availability for loan or hire (depending on the course), so you can take part without buying everything upfront.

What gloves should I bring for winter hillwalking?

Bring at least two pairs: a warm, waterproof pair for general walking and a second pair as a backup in case your first pair gets wet. Good hand protection makes a huge difference to comfort and safety in winter.

Do I need goggles or sunglasses?

Eye protection is strongly recommended. Bright snow can cause glare, and wind-driven snow can be uncomfortable. Sunglasses are often enough, but goggles can be useful in harsher conditions.

What if there is no snow or the conditions aren’t “proper winter”?

We always aim to deliver the best learning experience based on the conditions available. If snow and ice are limited, your instructor will adapt the training to focus on winter decision-making, navigation, terrain assessment, and any practical skills that can be safely taught.

Do Winter Skills courses run in bad weather?

Winter training often takes place in challenging conditions, which can be valuable for learning. However, safety comes first—your instructor may adapt the plan, choose a more sheltered venue, or alter objectives to keep the day safe and productive.

Will we cover avalanche awareness on a Winter Skills course?

Yes—winter safety includes understanding snowpack, recognising higher-risk terrain, and making safer route choices. The level of detail depends on the course format and conditions on the day.

Is a Winter Skills course safe for beginners?

Yes. The course is designed for beginners and is led by a qualified instructor who selects appropriate terrain, manages risk, and coaches you through new skills step by step.

Can I join the Winter Skills course on my own?

Absolutely. Many people attend solo. Small groups create a friendly environment where it’s easy to learn together and build confidence.

What age do I need to be to attend?

Winter Skills courses are usually aimed at adults and older teenagers. Minimum age requirements can vary by course and conditions, so check the course listing or contact us if you’re unsure.

Will I receive a certificate after Winter Skills training?

Where applicable, successful completion can be recognised with a certificate (depending on the course format). If a certificate is included, it will be stated in the course details.

What should I bring for food and drink in winter?

Bring high-energy snacks, a good lunch, and plenty to drink. In winter, a hot drink in a flask is highly recommended. We’ll also discuss cold-weather fuelling and hydration throughout the day.

How do I book a Winter Skills course?

Bookings can be made directly through our website. Winter dates can fill quickly, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred date.
